Olubadan of
Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso I, has broken a
17-year-jinx by visiting Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi
III.
That would be the first official visit of an Olubadan to the palace of
the Alaafin since 1999. We gathered that the last time a sitting
Olubadan paid an official visit to the Alaafin was during the reign of
Oba Yinusa Bankole Ogundipe, Arapasowu 1 in 1999.
But, Oba Adeyemi said the thrones of Alaafin and Olubadan have a cordial
relationship and several private visits had been mutually paid between
the two monarchs.
Oba Adetunji, who was warmly received by Oba Adeyemi, arrived the
palace at about 10.35am, was accompanied by members of the
Olubadan-in-Council and seniors chiefs in the Olubadan chieftaincy
lines.
Olubadan, in his speech, said the purpose of his visit was to appreciate
him for personally attending his coronation on Friday, March 4, 2016,
at the Mapo Hall Arcade, Ibadan and to promote unity among the Yoruba
traditional rulers.
Oba Adetunji had paid a similar visit to the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan
Akiolu, recently for the same purpose. He promised continuous cordial
relationship between the people of Ibadanland and Oyo Kingdom and said
his relationship with Oba Adeyemi preceded the coronation of the latter
in 1971.
According to him, Oba Adeyemi III is a man of many colours. He, however,
seized the occasion to pray for more fruitful years for the Alaafin and
himself on the thrones.
In his response, Oba Adeyemi enjoined Nigerians to continue to pray and work had for the resuscitation of the economy.
Alaafin, who recalled his relationship with Oba Adetunji for over 40
years, urged those involved in social vices such as kidnapping,
vandalism and terrorism to shun the device acts in the interest of the
good of the country.
Oba Adetunji was accompanied to Oyo by the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland,
Senator Lekan Balogun; Balogun of Ibadanland, Chief Owolabi Olakuleyin;
Otun Balogun, Dr. Olufemi Olaifa; Osi Balogun, Chief Tajudeen Ajibola;
